I received a funny phone call from my friend Robyn tonight. She asked if I was busy. But, she wasn't offering any information over the phone. When she came to pick me up, she said "We need Hannah too." Anyway, 3 baby birds (Killdeer) had fallen into a storm drain near the church. Robyn had made a little contraption to get them out, but we needed Hannah's smaller hands. After a few discussions over whether or not we should take them out-maybe mom and/or dad put them there, safer from the magpies, but they will drown if we leave them there-we decided to go for it. The babies definitely looked like they did not want to be down there, and mom & dad looked a little worried. (Although, we struggled over if we could REALLY tell if they were worried or not.) When it was all said and done, we did the right thing. Success! Momma was happy to see her babies. She went right over and sat on them. Both Hannah and Robyn checked on them later-Mom and babies were doing great! Good call Robyn! And do want to be a part of Hannah & Elisabeth's invention group they are starting?

So this is a post script to this post...lol...post script to post...anyway...Hannah was telling me how as she and Addie were walking by this momma, they thought it had a broken wing. They had big plans to try and nurse it back to health. Well, Robyn just called me to tell me this tidbit...Killdeer "pretend" to have a broken wing if you are close to their babies. As you approach them to tend to the "broken wing", they lead you farther and farther away from the nest. Once far enough away they call "Killdee" to their young. Pretty cool!
